Mothers

Mothers cover

High Street, Erdington.

Mothers was a music club in the late 1960s. It was above a furniture store called Dale Forty and a men’s outfitters called Brookes Brothers. The venue began as The Carlton Ballroom. It hosted national pop acts as well as local stars, and The Moody Blues used it as a rehearsal space.

As the music scene grew in the 1960s, the management started booking rock acts and changed the club’s name to Mothers.

Many famous artists performed there, including Black Sabbath, The Moody Blues, The Faces, Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, Fleetwood Mac, Fairport Convention, The Who, Free, Traffic (who made their debut at the club), Muddy Waters, Elton John, King Crimson, Yes and Pink Floyd, who recorded part of their live album Ummagumma at the venue. Well-known DJ John Peel also championed the club and appeared there.

Mothers opened on 9 August 1968 and closed on 3 January 1971.
