Use the online checking service
The online checking service can help you find out if you need planning permission for your project.
You can use the service to check
- If changes you want to make to a property or land in the future may need planning permission.
- If your property or land has planning restrictions, for example, if it is a listed building or is in a conservation area.
After you have used the service, you will be able to see if your property is affected by any restrictions, known as Article 3s. You can usually find any restrictions in the conditions of a Decision Notice.
The results are based on the answers you give and are for guidance only.
The service is not
- An official planning decision that you can rely on in the future.
- A formal decision on whether planning permission would be granted.
If you want a formal decision that you do not need planning permission you can apply to the council for a Lawful Development Certificate (LDC).
You will need to submit drawings of your proposal and pay a fee with your application.
The service does not
- Capture any of your personal data.
- Automatically include information about a property's history, such as restricted planning conditions.
