Common CV mistakes
Avoid these mistakes when writing your CV.
Spelling and grammar
Employers often reject CVs with spelling or grammar errors.
- Use a spell checker, but do not rely on it
- Ask someone you trust to review your CV
Adding “CV” at the top
Do not write “CV” at the top of your document. Employers know what it is.
Put your name at the top and make sure it stands out. Use a font size between 18 and 26 points.
Irrelevant information
Write your CV for a specific job.
If you use the same CV for lots of jobs, it may include irrelevant details. This can lead to rejection.
Focus on the job you’re applying for.
Too long
Keep your CV to 2 pages.
3 pages may be acceptable for senior management or academic roles.
Complicated formatting
Avoid styles that make your CV hard to read:
- boxes
- shading
- italics
- colours
- images
Stick to a simple, professional layout.
Missing sections
Do not leave out your personal profile.
This section is hard to write but essential. It’s your chance to show why your skills and experience make you right for the job.
