Covering letter
When you send a CV, include a cover letter. It’s not just a note to go with your CV - it’s an important part of your job application.
A poor cover letter can mean your CV is not read, even if you spent hours writing it.
Try to address your letter to a named person.
How to structure your cover letter
Your letter should have 4 paragraphs. Each one has a clear purpose.
Paragraph 1: why you’re writing
Say which job you’re applying for and where you saw it advertised.
Paragraph 2: why you’re suitable
Show you’ve read the job advert and understand what’s required.
Explain your skills and why you’re a good fit.
Research the company, its products and clients. Showing interest in the company can make you stand out.
Paragraph 3: extra skills (optional)
Include any relevant skills the employer has not asked for but that could be useful later.
Research can help you identify these and show how you add value.
Paragraph 4: closing statement
End positively. Invite the employer to contact you if they need more information.
Say you look forward to hearing from them.
Include your phone number, even if it’s at the top of the letter.
